Local core group

  • Recruit a project leader.

  • Identify skills needed by your leadership group project leader and local core group.
  • Form a board of directors/ leadership group of members who bring needed skills.

Board of Directors

  • Publicize your leadership group and your intent.
  • Identify project progress benchmarks.
  • Research what’s wanted and needed in your community.
  • Find out what service options are available now in your community.
  • Visit Helena’s Farm in the Dell and worksite.
  • Visit local group homes.
  • Visit local sheltered workshops and other types of services for people with developmental disabilities.
  • Develop and agree on a clear vision of who you’re trying to serve, what you want to accomplish, and what opportunities a Farm in the Dell will offer to your community.
  • Visit your County Extension Agent to discuss suitable crops, product or service gaps you might fill, and agricultural activities consistent with client skill levels.
  • Review your state laws and local regulations regarding operations of residences and worksites or people with developmental disabilities.
  • Identify the regulatory “hoops” you’ll need to jump through.
  • Begin contacting and screening potential operators.
  • Contact parent groups.
